THE ART OF THE MALA

WHAT IS A MALA?

A mala gives you something tangible to return to when the intention you began with gets lost in the noise of everyday life.

Traditionally, a mala is a strand of 108 beads used for repetition—a mantra, prayer, affirmation, breath, or intention.

Moving through the beads gives your hands something tangible to follow while bringing your attention back, one bead at a time, to what matters to you.

But a mala doesn't have to stay on a meditation cushion.

It can become something you return to throughout your day.

WHY USE A MALA?

A WAY TO RETURN

Traditionally, malas are used for repetition.

A way to return your attention—bead by bead.

In real life, it becomes something more practical.

A way to pause.
A way to reset.
A way to come back to yourself.

You might hold it during a moment of stress, move one bead while breathing, or anchor into a word or intention.

It doesn't need to be formal.

CHOOSING YOUR MALA

START WITH WHERE YOU ARE

Choosing a mala doesn't have to be complicated.

But it also isn't random.

You don't need to know everything about gemstones or understand every traditional meaning before you begin.

Start with a simpler question:
What do I need support with right now?

Maybe it's feeling more grounded, creating clarity, navigating change, staying emotionally steady, or reconnecting with yourself.

Start there.

NOTICE WHAT DRAWS YOU

Before you analyze every stone or read every description, notice what catches your attention.

Maybe it’s the colors, a particular stone, the name of a mala, or simply the piece you keep coming back to.

You don’t have to know why yet.

START WITH WHAT YOU NEED

Ask yourself: What do I need support with right now?

Maybe it’s grounding, clarity, emotional steadiness, confidence, creativity, or support as you move through change.

Your intention gives you another place to begin.

EXPLORE THE MEANING

Once a mala catches your attention, explore its story and the traditional meanings associated with its stones.

Sometimes those meanings add another layer to what already drew you in. Sometimes you simply love the piece.

Both are valid ways to choose.

Still not sure what you’re looking for?

THERE ISN’T ONE PERFECT CHOICE

YOU DON’T NEED TO GET IT “RIGHT”

There’s a right-for-now choice.

The mala you choose may reflect where you are today—or something you’re ready to bring more fully into your life.

And that can change.

As you change.
As your life shifts.
As your needs evolve.

I create each mala with intention and share the traditional meanings associated with its stones. But those meanings don’t have to decide what the piece means for you.

What matters is that your mala gives you something tangible to return to—an intention, a feeling, a way of being, or simply something you don’t want to lose sight of.

What your mala comes to represent for you is personal.
